Judith Hoersting and David Seiler open an exhibition of new work at Mercury 20 Gallery on March 7th with a reception for the artists from 6:00--9:00pm.
Judith Hoersting is a painter who distills a variety of subject matter--still life, portraits, botanicals--into straightforward visual images that resonate with the wisdom of simple existence. In her currently evolving body of work titled Color Studies, Hoersting pares down to the basics with a series of modular, geometric abstractions. Focusing on the circle, the artist connects powerful concepts of the cycle of life and death, the feminine principle, and the nature of reality. Influenced by Josef Albers' seminal color studies, Hoersting is driven to repeat her quintessential shape, exploring a myriad of refined colors, and generating elegant and surprising combinations.
Influenced by the great figurative artists of art history as well as the legendary graffiti artists of the street, multi-media artist David Seiler creates new visions in sculpture, drawing and painting for the times we live in. A practitioner and teacher of gymnastics, Seiler is fascinated with anatomy, physicality and motion. He delights in creating bold figures that fly through the air, jump, twist, fall, reach out and stand on their heads. David Seiler's humorous, heartfelt works visualize epic representations of love, time and process for all to question.
David Seiler was born in Vallejo, CA. He lives, laughs and works in Oakland, CA. He received a BFA in Sculpture from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.
Mercury 20 also presents an ongoing group exhibition in its back gallery. The artwork changes monthly and features new work from the gallery artists. Mercury 20 Gallery is an artist-run gallery in the heart of downtown Oakland; part of the emerging arts district in the Broadway/Telegraph corridor. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday, 12:00 noon - 3:00 pm, or by appointment.
