I have been painting from the landscape for over 25 years; for the past 10 years, I focused on painting seascapes from my home in San Francisco, as well as Cannon Beach, Oregon and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I particularly love the bold movement of gestural lines of color on the horizon during sunset. My paintings represent a specific moment in time.
I’m primarily a Plein Air painter; I work from direct observation of nature. I take my special “travel bag” of paints and other necessary gear and set up outside or inside by a window with a view.
In the summers of 2003 and 2004, I enjoyed working as an Artist-in-Resident in Yosemite National Park through the Yosemite Renaissance program. The beauty of the park was awesome and the palette of the colors challenged me to create new color tonalities in my work. I enjoy mixing paints. I try to get the exact colors and value relationships I see and spot by spot the painting begins to emerge
Last summer during a sabbatical from work, I went to Venice, Italy where I continued my exploration of the landscape with gouache and watercolor paints. Again, I was challenged by new color and the experience of new light. My goal is to continue to return to the places that I love to paint and to discover new outdoor venues.
